It’s not everyday that you see see a shot-putter kicking his shot around with his feet. Ashton Eaton of the University of Oregon track and field team did at the Oregon Relays at Hayward Field on 26 April, 2008.

I took this picture in Spring 2008, prior to graduation from the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication. I was working as a photographer for Mosaic (hopefully, our issue will be up soon) on the Spring 2008 issue based around the Olympic Trials. The picture was taken right before dusk on Bowerman Curve at Hayward Field during the women’s 5,000 meter run at the Oregon Relays. I used a shutter speed of 1/15th of a second and panned with the field.
